here a quick look into the designer's workbook ...
THE TECHNOLOGy of the future in the MAVERICK² RX
For RedBull X-ALPS 2011 ICARO paragliders has built a special glider. Light, high performance, controllable and a high light visually: the MAVERICK² RX. What is so special about our designer's new favourite competition wing? Read the latest interview with Michael Nesler ...
IP: What is so special about the MAVERICK² RX?
Michael: It is expensive, lightly built and for high performance: 27g NCV-material, Titan-Flex-battens in the leading edge, novel laser cut tensioning at the rear back. It shows an unexpected low sink rate in the thermals despite its high trim speed and the very small aspect ratio - thanks to its 4-point-line-construction. The new tensioning and the Titan-Flex-battens make the MAVERICK² RX extremely stable and controllable in extreme situations. Mike could test it's characteristics in the beginning days of RedBull X-ALPS 2011 thoroughly.
IP: What means extremely light and fast?
Michael: 3.9 kg glider weight and 46 km/h trim speed. With this trim speed you fly like with a hang glider but you are safely on the way. The MAVERICK² RX proto is completely going in the opposite direction with it's construction compared with the other paraglider competition developments which are based on 2-liner. But despite its 4-line concept the overall drag is lower!
IP: Why?
Michael: When using 2 lines one must use thicker lines in order to het the necessary stability.
IP: Why is the MAVERICK² RX just white? Where is the ICARO swing?
Michael: Why not? Like this you can see the really cool tensioning in the inside better. Red Bull did not allow the ICARO swing in the competition X-ALPS.
IP: What are you going to do with this new technology?
Michael: The new Titan-Flex-battens are my favourite: light bus indestructible. You can scrunch up the glider and cram it into the packsack and the shape remains. They do not break, they do not blend. Like the indestructible spectacle frames everyone knows. Same material. Their own tension is much higher compared to common plastic or carbon battens. Simply genius and innovative. But they are extremely expensive. We are going to add them into our serial product range - that is for sure. But this will only be part in the "luxury models". I hope the paraglider market is ready to spend a little bit more money for this high light.
And we are going to develop on the base of the MAVERICK² RX a EN D glider in 2012. The performance is already there.
IP: Who can fly the MAVERICK² RX?
Michael: Everyone who can master a C- or D-glider.
IP: Who is flying Mike's glider now?
Michael: Me (laughing).
IP: If you had to describe the glider in one sentence?
Michael: In distance flying you get forward so precisely and fast that you forget that you actually would have a speed system as well.
